Graduation is on Monday, June 127th. Students need to be at Bur Oak S.S. no later than 6:45pm as the ceremony will start promptly at 7pm.
Below is a list of all the Graduation Awards, and a brief description what is needed to achieve these awards. Please keep in mind that we try to be fair and would like as many students as possible to be able to achieve recognition for their outstanding efforts. Every attempt will be made to maximize the number of award winners by considering which award is best suited among the outstanding students in the grade 8 graduating class.

GRADUATION AWARDS
INDIVIDUAL SUBJECT AWARDS
English Award
Presented to a student who has achieved high overall academic standing in both terms and who is consistently engaged in activities and lessons in all strands of the English program.
Math Award
Presented to a student who has achieved high overall academic standing in both terms, extends themselves beyond grade appropriate material, is consistently engaged in activities and lessons, and applies lessons to everyday problem solving.
Science Award
Presented to a student who has achieved high overall academic standing in both terms, who consistently demonstrates investigation skills in all areas of study, and is consistently engaged in activities and lessons.
History Award
Presented to a student who excels in History, has achieved high overall academic standing in both terms, and is consistently engaged in activities and lessons.
Geography Award
Presented to a student who excels in Geography, has achieved high overall academic standing in both terms, and is consistently engaged in activities and lessons.
French Award
Presented to a student who has achieved high overall academic standing in both terms, is consistently engaged in activities and lessons, and extends their learning with strong oral participation.
Music Award
Presented to a student who has achieved high overall academic standing in both terms, is consistently engaged in activities and lessons, who has participated in band, and who demonstrates dedication to develop their skill.
Visual Arts Award
Presented to a student who has continued to develop their skill and achieved high academic standing in both terms.
Dance Award
Presented to a student who has achieved high overall academic standing in both terms and who participates with a positive attitude.
Dramatic Arts Award
Presented to a student who has achieved high overall academic standing in both terms and who has extended creative expression to other subjects.
Performing Arts Award
Presented to a student who excels in all areas of the performing arts and has demonstrated a passion for the Arts by seeking opportunities to perform.
Physical Education/Health Award
Presented to a student who has achieved high overall academic standing in Physical Education and Health in both terms and actively participates in team sports.
Female Athlete of the Year
Presented to a female student who participates with a high level of skill on a variety of different school teams, has a positive attitude towards athletics, and demonstrates leadership in athletics.
Male Athlete of the Year
Presented to a male student who participates with a high level of skill on a variety of different school teams, has a positive attitude towards athletics, and demonstrates leadership in athletics.
Valedictorians (one male student and one female student)
One male and one female student selected to speak at the graduation ceremony. These individuals demonstrate high academic standing overall as well as highly effective communication skills.
MAJOR AWARDS
Honour Roll
Presented to students who have earned an 80% average in both terms in all subject areas (considering equal weighting of all strands of subjects).
Academic Excellence Award/York Region Award
Presented to a student who achieves the highest overall academic average in the year in all subject areas.
Ontario Principal’s Council Leadership Award
Presented to a student who displays outstanding leadership in all aspects of social life. This student is successful academically, participates in extracurricular activities, is socially inclusive, and demonstrates exemplary service to the school community.
Benjamin Stanton Cornell Character Award
Presented to a student who demonstrates outstanding emulation of the school character traits, is a positive role model, and participates in the school community.
John Hopkins Award
Presented to a student who has demonstrated increased dedication to academics in all or most subjects.
